Hearing aids and blocked ears: arranging a home visit in Maidstone
If you wear hearing aids and notice a blocked feeling or a change in hearing, it can be difficult to know what needs checking. Earwax is one possible cause, but an examination is needed to understand what is happening. Our mobile service brings ear examinations and suitable wax removal to homes across Maidstone and Mid Kent.
Why an ear check can help
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust explains that hearing-aid users can be more susceptible to wax build-up. Your usual audiology team can check your ears and advise on wax management. A change in hearing may also need a hearing-aid check or further assessment; wax removal does not replace those services.
When to seek urgent help
For hearing that changes suddenly, deteriorates over days or weeks, or is accompanied by ear pain or discharge, seek an urgent GP appointment or contact NHS 111. Arrange medical advice promptly rather than waiting for a routine wax-removal visit.
What happens at a home visit?
We examine your ears and assess whether wax removal is appropriate. The available methods are microsuction, warm water irrigation and manual removal; the choice depends on the assessment. If another service is needed, we explain the next step. We cannot promise that removal will resolve every hearing concern.
Practical arrangements for you or a relative
You can arrange a visit at home or discuss a care-home visit with us. A relative or carer can help with arrangements, with the person’s agreement. Please call first for group visits. Our guide to booking for a relative explains the practical steps.
Follow the care instructions provided by your hearing-aid service. Avoid using cotton buds or other objects inside your ear canal. Ask for individual advice before using ear drops, especially if you have a known or suspected perforated eardrum.
