Why cotton buds can make blocked ears worse
When an ear feels blocked, it can be tempting to reach for a cotton bud. It may look like a quick way to clean the canal, but it can push wax further inside and make the blockage worse.
Earwax helps protect your ears from dirt and germs. It normally works its way out without you needing to reach into the ear canal. Cleaning the outer ear is different from trying to remove a blockage deep inside.
Get advice before trying to clear a blockage
A blocked feeling, muffled hearing or ringing can have more than one cause. A pharmacist can advise about wax build-up and suitable softening treatments. Do not use ear drops if you have a perforated eardrum.
What an ear examination can tell us
During a home visit, we ask about your symptoms and ear history, then examine both ears. Where wax removal is appropriate, the method is chosen for your ears rather than assuming everyone needs the same treatment.
Our available methods are microsuction, warm water irrigation and manual removal. The visit ends with a recheck and individual aftercare advice. Call before your appointment if you have questions about preparation or suitability. If your hearing has not returned after treatment, speak to your GP.

Prices and visiting areas
£70 up to 10 road miles; £80 over 10 to 15 road miles; £90 over 15 to 30 road miles, travel included. Your home visit includes travel, a consultation, an ear examination and wax removal where suitable, for one clear price. The full visit fee also applies if no wax is present or removal is not suitable or cannot be completed.
